Nichols set for challenge at St. Marys
John Mike Nichols soon will have a new challenge on his hands at St. Marys High School. The Blue Devil softball coach has taken over the helm of the volleyball program after being an assistant to former head coach Andrea Lemon for the past three years. Coach Nichols’ squad had quite the season this spring when the Blue Devil softball team made their first trip to the Class A state tournament, held at Jackson Park, and finished third. However, even though he had a young softball team and he’s going to have a pretty young volleyball squad, that doesn’t mean success is going to be immediate. “Coming of a 2-20 season last year and a losing record the year before and the year before that we’re just hoping to get some stability,” said Nichols, who will be assisted by former middle school head coach Tina Grose. The new coach said he isn’t expecting to have a single senior on the roster this season and players like Kayla “Boogie” Grose and Amy Childers are going to have to lead the way.
