Don’t lower drinking age
One hundred college presidents, including several in West Virginia and Ohio, are supporting “an informed and dispassionate debate” over lowering the legal drinking age. Though the educators say they merely want a study of the issue, some have been candid in supporting a change in the law. As it stands, alcohol consumption by those under 21 is prohibited throughout the nation because Congress penalizes states that do not go along with the federal standard. Supporters of the Amethyst Initiative, the campaign under which the college presidents have made their request, want the legal drinking age lowered to 18. That’s a bad idea—though some of the educators seem to believe binge drinking could be curbed by allowing 18-year-olds to buy and consume alcohol. Yes, there is too much binge drinking on college campuses. However, “decriminalizing” a practice many under-21 students engage in is unlikely to lessen their consumption of beer, wine and liquor.
