Plans for new facility remain on hold
MARIETTA — Plans for construction of a new Marietta Family YMCA remain on hold. Al Miller, YMCA executive director, said preliminary studies were done on a site at Indian Acres Park and it was determined to be a good location for the new Y. Then the Y learned the Marietta City Schools Board of Education was going to request a bond levy to build an educational complex along Colegate Drive that would include a new high school and a new K-fourth grade building, as well as renovations of the current high school into a fifth-eighth grade facility. Miller said the Y board had discussed with the school board and Marietta Schools Superintendent Herb Young the possibility of locating the YMCA at the proposed school site. “The big plus for us was that the infrastructure (water, sewer, other utilities) would already exist there, which would save us millions on a new facility,” Miller said, emphasizing the Y would not be built with tax monies but with funds raised through a capital campaign.
