Boy Scouts of America 100th Anniversary

Nearly 4,000 youth involved in local Scouting

March 1, 2010

PARKERSBURG — When the Boy Scouts of America began in February 1910, there were no local councils and Scout organizations sprouted up throughout the country one troop at a time through grassroots efforts. As of Dec. 31, there were 3,656 youth participating in the 17-county Allohak Council. Another 1,748 adult volunteers are in the programs. “Originally there were no councils, the organization was started a troop at a time. As the program grew and the needs for local service grew, then local councils were started,” said Dale Musgrave, Scout executive with the Allohak Council. Allohak Council 618, headquartered at 1340 Juliana St. in Parkersburg, encompasses Ritchie, Wood, Pleasants, Calhoun, Jackson, Roane, Wirt, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Barbour, Randolph, Tucker and Upshur counties, W.Va., and Washington and Athens counties in Ohio. “Back in the 1950s this council was two, three, or even four different councils.
