Council meets today

VIENNA - City council meets today to work through a lengthy agenda that includes several bid approvals for everything from equipment to street-paving projects.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the city building on 29th Street.

The agenda includes seven bid approvals for equipment and projects. Street-paving projects and the purchase and installation of fire hydrants are included in the list.

In terms of equipment, there are bid approvals for a vacuum truck, a street sweeper, a tractor with mower attachment, a Dodge Charger for the police department and a GMC 2500 for the parks department.

Bob Marshall, council member in charge of the finance committee, said the items have already been approved in the budget that took effect July 1.

"That was all part of the budget that we prepared back in January and February. Actually, now all we're doing is approving the actual purchases and the bids themselves," Marshall said. "The department heads have waited for months on some of this equipment."

A second reading of a sewer use-industrial waste ordinance also is on the meeting's agenda.

"That's the state-mandated sewer plan for sewer water treatment. Nationwide, municipalities are being mandated to do more and more to protect sewer water from contaminants that could eventually end up in streams and rivers. This is a part of that ongoing process," he said.

The ordinance does not involve a sewer rate increase.
