Suspicious fire guts warehouse

PARKERSBURG - A warehouse was gutted Wednesday by a fire that investigators believe may have been intentionally set. A firefighter sustained minor injuries during the incident at Bear Run Auto Wrecking, 625 Ryan St., Parkersburg, said Capt. Jason Kuhl of the Parkersburg Fire Department. The warehouse is owned by Ron Vaughan and is located off of Seventh Street behind the Dairy Queen.

Search warrant led to animal rescue effort

PARKERSBURG - Complaints about pollution and animal living conditions led to a what has become the largest animal rescue effort ever conducted in West Virginia. According to the warrant signed by Wood County Magistrate Joyce Purkey on Aug. 14, Wood County Sheriff's Deputy Robert G. Sims said the search was related to environmental offenses at the site of Whispering Oaks Kennel in Wood County.

Car hits school bus

MARIETTA - A combination of speed and too many occupants in a car may have contributed to a Tuesday afternoon crash on Jennings Hill Road involving a carload of teens and a school bus. Six passengers in a PT Cruiser - all appearing to be teens - were transported to area hospitals following the 4:30 p.m. wreck.

Humane Society officials in town prior to raid

PARKERSBURG - Humane Society officials from all over the country were in town a few days prior to the weekend raid of a local dog kennel. Steven Whitehair, humane officer for the Parkersburg Humane Society, said management officials were engaged in conference calls for almost a month prior to the weekend rescue of nearly a 1,000 dogs, most of which were purebred dachshunds.
